I never was a free man and it was explained to me in my childhood by Karl Marx. But three years ago, in addition to being a slave of historical surcumstances, society and so on, I became a cyber-slave, total slave! Maybe this is why we, the slaves of the slaves, wish to call ourselves -- "webmasters"!

Maybe it was two years back that I understood the need for the web directories on my sites, where I can keep my complains and chronicals of the web-slavery. A year ago I discover that I also need BUSINESS directories! Who was I kidding? Of course, it's business to have a developed website. Respect your time, slave! Treat yourself as a business, my friend.

Your time = your money. Money must make money. Website is an investment. (Unless you made it out of egomania). They come for service and products -- and you better figure it out, what is your price. What would you pay for using your own site? We all know that "free" is only a teaser.

There is a way to turn yourself into "master" -- think as one. Creat the distance between you, master, and the webmaster, who you hared. Keep it professional, not personal.

New? Bad news. Ethiop Village is gone. "Above the World" is no more (thanks God, I didn't use it). "MyComputer" -- asked to pay... I removed their code from my pages. I better get ready for Tripod and theGlobe going non-free (my biggest sites are there). 2001: TheGlobe is gone.

2003: So, I got the traffic, but most of it comes from the search engines and by accident. More than 50%? I don't know. It's getting better, if you continue to update your metatags. But at the moment I do not have any webmaster strategy; I got to the 3rd generations of my webpages and simply "use" my cyber space for classes, productions, writing.

2004 & After ..."It has been a great success over the years. The Web information Resource for Newbies has survived many ups and downs and has had almost a million unique visitors over the years. Don't say wow because that is nothing for a web site. Its actually low to moderate traffic. The major players receive that many uniques in days weeks or months."

Yeah, I this mil/year. Success? Nothing.

Only after 8 years of webbing I began to make "new.html" pages. And "new.txt" files...

And I stay away from new technologies. Old HTML.

New

2005: As a webmaster, I do not have any business ideas. It's wonder that my webpages got to this 2K/day traffic; all I do is keep writing. Writing what? Notes for myself. Notes for the classes I teach, the shows I direct, the books I want to publish...
New? New obsession -- the ads by Google. I placed the AdSense code on all pages -- because for a change this program does pay! So, I went crazy -- $3/day? How about five bucks? What about ten a day? $300/month? Wait! What if I can make $100 every day?
Webmaster's dreams...

Well, finally, the pages pay for themselves (hosting, domain names and etc.) -- not for my labor although...

You see? This is something unthinkable for a book. "New"? New edition?
Well, the "smart pages" are set in such a way that they keep updating themselves (htmlgear). The fresh content is a must, if you want visitors to become repeat readers (as I use to call them before). Loyal clients, how they are called in business.
New is what makes them to come back.
And they should know that the NEW is there! That's why we do buy newspapers.
Another madness -- the cqcounter (you see it on every page too). Neat -- I can see the trands of my pages' traffic (you can see it as well). Who does come to my sites, from where, what language they use and etc. -- of course, I can't resist and keep checking the data! Stop it, Anatoly! Stop it right now!
So, what is new, Anatoly? Me! New thoughts about the web, even I say -- realizations. This web "diary" goes nowhere. First, the web-writing is nothing less than faking writing. The numbers are fake. Newspaper deep. TV screen flat. Walk away from it, leave it behind, anatoly. Write for the page of paper. The public space is your limitations. The millions. Keep the webmaster in you under control. Be skeptical. Only the minimum. The web is to support the real actions -- texts, directing, thoughts. The content. Be smart. Be in control... Sounds different? Contradicts everything I wrote about this lovely couple Web and Net? Not really.

10.24.04. Oh, well! I just took a look at this cqcounter again -- on weekends I lose 50% of visitors and fear that the numbers won't be back... The students do not do their homework before Sunday night. Now I know.

Look -- "easy notes Galileo by Bertolt Brecht"... I have Brecht's notes, but their are not "easy"... "papers about Ivan the terrible by eisenstein" -- the paper is due on monday! "the 12th night analysis" -- another assignment is due. "Analysis of Desire Under the Elms" -- I bet they got to my O'Neill page...

You got the picture. How useful my instructional pages could be, I do not know. I do not think that my live students use them. I do.

I write something new before (and after) my classes; this is how the pages are getting bigger. I write to help me to tech. That's all.

Right now I have to go to shows.vtheatre.net/shrew to get ready for the rehearsals of The Taming of the Shrew.

Web secrets? Sweat...

The Net will go small... The Web goes for specialized markets. In one-man operation the smaller is the better.

Web is very new as a field of business, very little known about its economic laws. Experiment, there are not many formulas to learn yet. And the models are to study, to think about how you can have your own unique business model.

Get Site Info When will my webpages make any business sense? Probably never. Will the traffic grow 150% again in 2005? It have to go 1000% before I can see any real money. I have no idea what will it take to increase the traffic 10 folds in one year. Extra income is nice, but I'm a webmaster by default, I can't jump over my head, even if I would have the time to do it. And this is my new realization.

I have enough pages to keep writing. And I will. Thanks, webmaster, and so long.

I hope you understand the difference between books and ebooks?
